A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key government projects.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its role in public projects. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed pending a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
